Brown-bag-it for veterans

May 25 is “National Brown-Bag-It Day,” and House of Hope is marking the occasion with a special effort to help local veterans.

Brown-Bag-It Day falls close to Memorial Day, observed this year on Monday, May 30.

During the week starting May 25, House of Hope asks that you “brown bag” your lunch, put aside the money you’d otherwise spend and donate it to House of Hope’s Veterans Fund.  It’s something an office can do together, too, by pooling your saved lunch money and making a group contribution.

The fund is set aside to help Martin County veterans and their families with such needs as rent, utilities and medicine.

House of Hope’s special Veteran’s Fund was started in 2013 by Fun Tours Travel owner Kathleen Padova and travel consultant Elaine Hirsch. The women had read about the plight of local veterans and wanted to do something to benefit people past and present who have served in the military.

They conducted a special fund-raiser, “Travel for the Troops,” that raised more than $13,000 to start the Veterans Fund at House of Hope.

Veterans have always been among the people helped by House of Hope, but this was the first time that the agency  established a fund specifically dedicated to helping veterans and their families. The effort also helped House of Hope forge and even closer working relationship with the Martin County Veterans Services Office to assist local veterans in need.

Over the years,  other groups and individuals have added to the House of Hope Veterans Fund, and the Brown-Bag-It-Day is another opportunity to give it a boost.
